R900m to protect SA borders

It costs an estimated R900 million to protect South Africas borders, Defence Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula said on Wednesday.

She says 13 infantry companies are present along the country's borders to prevent the illegal flow of people, vehicles, arms and drugs.

However, concerns were raised that not enough resources had been dedicated to border control.

Mapisa-Nqakula says the South African National Defence Force (Sandf) plans to strengthen its capacity along the border.

Speaking in Parliament, Cape Town, the minister said her department was committed to fixing problems identified in a recent defence review.

The document found the cash-strapped Sandf was in a critical state of decline.

The review warned that South Africas border security and peace-keeping interventions could be affected as a result.
