Cape Town - Tens of thousands of people took to the streets of Cape Town on Wednesday to protest against the Israeli incursion in Gaza.

According to tweets from the scene, up to 30 000 protesters gathered in the city centre.

The protest was organised by the Muslim Judicial Council (MJC) and other affiliated organisations, including Numsa.

News24 reporter Lauren Hess tweeted that shouts of "Free Palestine" could be heard.

Kamal Salasa tweeted that the Palestinian ambassador shouted "Viva South Africa".

Murder-accused Shrien Dewani's mental health will be officially observed at Valkenberg Hospital in Cape Town, the Western Cape High Court ordered on Friday.

Director of Public Prosecutions Rodney de Kock brought the application for observation before Judge President John Hlophe, when a grey-haired Dewani made his third appearance.

He said observation was necessary since the mental health report prepared by Valkenberg psychiatrist Dr Sean Baumann differed in its opinion to that of Professor Tuviah Zabow, acting on behalf of Dewani.

Johannesburg - Correctional services on Thursday refuted claims by the wife and lawyer of convicted killer Clive Derby-Lewis that an application had been made for medical parole.

The department received an incomplete application for medical parole for Derby-Lewis and was waiting for a complete form, spokesperson Manelisi Wolela said in a statement.

More than a year after South African teacher Pierre Korkie was kidnapped by al-Qaeda in Yemen, humanitarian organisation Gift of the Givers says he has been spotted alive for a third time in as many months.

The Bloemfontein teacher and his wife Yolande were kidnapped in May last year.

Yolande was later released in the hope that she could raise a R30 million ransom but the campaign has been unsuccessful thus far.

 Evictions at Lwandle near Strand in the Western Cape must be put on hold, the transport department said on Wednesday.

Minister Dipuo Peters undertook to issue a directive to Sanral to withdraw the court order while short and long term solutions are sought to resolve the challenges at hand," spokesman Tiyani Ponto-Rikhotso said in a statement.

The trial of Czech fugitive Radovan Krejcir and his five co-accused is set to resume today, at the Palm Ridge Magistrate's court.

A man who claims he was kidnapped by Krejcir and his co-accused after a drug smuggling deal went bad, has been sworn in as the second state witness.

Bheki Lukhele told the court the accused kidnapped him after his brother disappeared with 25kg of tik he was supposed to help transport to Australia for Krejcir.
