South Africa will host the Southern African Development Community (SADC) ministers of health meeting on Ebola, the health department said on Wednesday.

The meeting would be held on Thursday to deliberate on the state of readiness and develop an approach in response to the Ebola outbreak in west Africa, said spokesman Joe Maila.

"The meeting will bring together ministers of health and key stakeholders to build a consensus on appropriate strategic actions to prevent the spread of the ongoing Ebola [outbreak]."

Police in the North West have confirmed that a case of cruelty to animals has been opened against the chairperson of the National Council of Provinces Thandi Modise. The former North West Premier now faces charges of neglect. Police and the National Council of Societies for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (NSPCA officials visited the farm outside Potchefstroom at the weekend. They found that the animals had been left without water and food for weeks. Pigs had already started eating each other and others were dead.

Activists are using the TB conference currently under way in Durban to make their voices heard.

TB mortality is the leading cause of death in adults and children in South Africa and it is hoped the new drugs will make a huge impact in combating the harmful illness.

The South African National Blood Service has lifted the ban on gay people donating blood

The new policy implimented by the blood service would do away with discriminating against sexually active gay men

The policy which received much criticism when it was implimented in 2006 gets the boot almost a month away from World Blood Donor Day on June 14.
