The trial of Czech fugitive Radovan Krejcir and five others is expected to continue in the High Court in Johannesburg, sitting in Palm Ridge, on Wednesday.

On Monday, the court heard that police tried to hide the assault of one of Krejcir's co-accused, Desai Luphondo.

Annelene van den Heever, for Krejcir and Luphondo, said the police had deliberately kept a page from them that came from the police station's occurrence book.

The SA Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Sacci) on Thursday called for a specialised copper theft unit, following three consecutive months of theft increases.

"Although the SAPS have done excellent work with practical legislative initiatives to curb copper theft thus far, this project needs to move forward by way of introducing a specialised copper theft police unit," the chamber said.

The value of copper stolen increased to R15.4 million in May, according to Sacci's copper theft barometer released on Thursday.

The war on cable theft is being intensified, after the South African economy bled R12.5 million during the month of April alone.

The copper theft barometer by The SA chamber of Commerce and Industry shows copper theft rose by 26% compared to April 2013.

This means that copper theft drains more than R5 billion a year, crippling the country's economic growth year on year
