The Gauteng Department of Education failed to spend more than R130 million for Further Education and Training (FET) colleges between 2010 and 2013.

The department also fell short of targeted numbers for learners enrolled for National Certificate Vocational courses as well as those who successfully completed the courses.

This emerged during an analysis of the department's budget for the 2014/15 financial year by the Portfolio committee on Education in the Gauteng Legislature.

On average more than 2.2 million pupils are subjected to corporal punishment in schools across the country.

The SA Human Rights Commission, which is currently hosting a two day conference on the matter says,  there are schools who still administer corporal punishment.

Case in point is of a Vooslorus teacher who assaulted a grade two pupil and forced her to wipe her own blood off a classroom floor.

Education spokesperson Phumla Sekhonyane says the Rebontsheng Primary School teacher was suspended after the media exposed the incident last week

US president Barack Obama has been accorded with an honorary doctorate of laws degree by the University of Johannesburg.

Obama was made aware of the accolade during his state visit to the country last year, and accepted the honour.
