Cape Town - Tens of thousands of people took to the streets of Cape Town on Wednesday to protest against the Israeli incursion in Gaza.

According to tweets from the scene, up to 30 000 protesters gathered in the city centre.

The protest was organised by the Muslim Judicial Council (MJC) and other affiliated organisations, including Numsa.

News24 reporter Lauren Hess tweeted that shouts of "Free Palestine" could be heard.

Kamal Salasa tweeted that the Palestinian ambassador shouted "Viva South Africa".

JOHANNESBURG - IEC chairwoman Pansy Tlakula has filed an application in the Constitutional Court for leave to appeal the Electoral Court's ruling that her misconduct in 2009 warrants her removal from office.

In papers filed in the Constitutional Court on Wednesday, Tlakula claims the Electoral Court erred in its finding and that its procedures were unfair.

She denied being guilty of misconduct, and argued the Electoral Commission Act did not govern the conduct of a commissioner, prior to him or her assuming office.

The EFF national leadership has condemned what it calls the violent and undemocratic decision of the ANC Speaker to remove its members from the Gauteng legislature.

"During the debate on the State of the Province, the speaker of the Gauteng legislature, Ntombi Mekgwe, called police to remove Economic Freedom Fighters members from parliament because they were dressed in worker clothes," spokesman Mbuyiseni Ndlozi said in a statement on Tuesday.

EFF leader Julius Malema is expected to brief the media - after they were kicked out of Parliament during day two of SONA debate yesterday.

This comes after NCOP chairperson Thandi Modise asked Malema to retract his statement that the ANC government is responsible for the Marikana killings of August 2012.

Modise added it is unparliamentary for Malema to suggest - that there was a deliberate intention for the mineworkers to be killed.

EFF MP's followed after their Commander in Chief was asked to leave shouting murderers.

The joint sitting of Parliament has now adjourned with National Council of Provinces chair Thandi Modise issuing a strong warning to Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema after his party walked out of the National Assembly last night.

Malema was kicked out of Parliament on Thursday during the second day of the State of the Nation Address (Sona) debate after an altercation with Modise.

The ruling party had high praise for President Jacob Zuma's State of the Nation address on Tuesday, but opposition leaders described it as "mediocre" and "muted".

"What was important about the speech is that it is converting the manifesto of the ANC into a programme of action," ANC secretary general Gwede Mantashe told reporters outside the National Assembly.

He described it as an "action-oriented" speech.

Power utility Eskom is warning consumers of more possible load reductions scheduled this evening from 5:30 to 6:30pm.

Eskom spokesperson Andrew Etzinger says the power cuts  implemented are because the power system remains severely costraints.

Last night, during the state of the nation address President Jacob Zuma announced government has embark on plan to restructure the energy sector.

Zuma says progress at the multibillion Medupi power station will be accelerated to ensure its power delivery - by the December 2014

President Jacob Zuma is expected to make his first public appearance in over a week when he delivers his seventh state-of-the-nation address on Tuesday evening.

Parliament is expected to be a hive of activity as workers cleared the ceremonial path Zuma is expected to walk before he enters the National Assembly.

Zuma is expected to be escorted through the streets of Cape Town by the military and mounted police.

The Gauteng department of Education has disbanded the School governing body of the Fidelitas School Comprehenisve High School over alleged misuse of school funds worth R29 000.

The allegations of corruption and fraud at the school surfaced after teachers discovered  money was being transferred from the schools account by the administration clerk.

 Investigations on the matter reveal that the SGB has purchased goods for a company - whose owners are known to them.

Former ANC's spokesperson Jackson Mthembu now holds position of Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Environmental Affairs. The ANC is currently announcing its caucus members and whips - placing MP's such as Paul Mashatile and Yunus Carrim as heads of different portfolio committees. Parliaments portfolio committee serves to monitor budgets of national governments, and to amend and introduce new bills.

South Africa's power system will remain vulnerable during winter, acting Eskom CEO Collin Matjila said on Thursday.

"The country still remains vulnerable and it will be the same during winter," Matjila told reporters in Johannesburg.

"While we continue with maintenance, as part of our strategy to have remaining capacity... we will see a reduction in the maintenance schedule."

Winter, from Eskom's perspective, was characterised by an "emergency situation".

Newly appointed minister of Home Affairs - Malusi Gigaba is expected to give an address tomorrow- on the opening of Visa Facilitation Centres in SA.

This comes as new regulations under the Immigrations act were introduced - prohibiting foreingers from using agents to apply for their visa.

The department has now appointed VFS Global  in efforts to process and manage visas aswell as permit applications.

Waters tweeted a picture likening ANC voters to dogs , caused another uproar on twitter , a week after the EWN was attacked for an alleged racist cartoon.

The ANC and the DA came out tops in yesterdays by-elections, held across four provinces.

The ANC retained their positions in ward 27 in Tshwane and also gained ward 58 previously presented by the DA.

In Western Cape and Limpopo, the official opposition bagged ward 25 and ward four respectively but lost to ANC in KZN.

Nine political parties are expected to go head to head in tomorrow's by elections for six municipal wards in four provinces.

The two by-elections are set to take place in Gauteng, where one ward was previously represented by ANC -after the councillor got arrested.

 The second ward in Tshwane became vacant , after their DA councillor resigned.

IEC spokesperson - Kate Bapela says voting stations will be open form 7am in the morning until 9pm in the evening.

Axed Sadtu boss Thobile Ntola is expected to challenge his expulsion by appealing it at the union's national congress in October.

Ntola was fired on Monday, after being guilty of misconduct and having innapropriate relationships with service providers.

Mboweni's withdrawal was announced by the ANC's secretary-general Gwede Mantashe yesterday ,where very little detail as to why he withdrew was given

Political analysts say Mboweni may be deployed elsewhere as the law allows the president to appoint two ministers and two deputy ministers who are not Members of Parliament

New and old members of parliament  are being sworn in by Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng presiding over the country's fifth parliament.

 MP's who have taken oath so far are President Jacob Zuma -deputy president Cyril Ramaphosa,EFF leader Juliuas Malema and the DA's Mmusi Maimane amoung many.

Zuma is expected to remain as an MP until he is formally elected for a second term by members of the National Assembly.

Efforts to help alleviate the country's rising energy demands are gaining momentum,with a new R1.5 billion solar power plant unveiled near Kimberly.

The 100 hectare site is expected to generate more than 85 000 mega watts,which is enough electricity to supply an estimated 19 000 homes each year.

This is part of government's plan to develop and set up innovative solar plants around the country ,to improve energy security.

Gauteng finance MEC Mandla Nkomfe has resigned from both the provincial government and legislature.

This comes after Nkomfe's name had been mentioned as one of the candidates expected to take over from the current Gauteng premier Nomvula Mokonyane.

GP Governemnt has confirmed Nkomfe is not on the ANC's legislature list and will not be part of the the new Gauteng government.
